[Note on name: it was thought that Frank's middle name was Elmer; however his son Joseph was given the middle name of Elmo and Frank's death record gives his middle name as Elmo. On the other hand, his younger brother, Elmer Francis, is said to have his name in reverse order. His wife Dorothy was a very devout Catholic; perhaps she considered that there being no St. Elmer, he should have a proper saint's name, and chose St. Elmo as a close substitute for Elmer. He always went by the name of "Frank"; if his baptismal record can be found, it may have recorded the name his parents gave him.]

FAMILY STORY: GREAT DEPRESSION The family endured great poverty, with the children wearing castoff clothes and shoes from charitable sources and picking up pieces of coal along the railroad tracks to use for fuel. Frank's oldest son, Francis, worked in the CCC camps for money to support the family. The children dropped out of school as soon as they could hold jobs. Frank's daughter Dorothy said that her father once had her accompany him when he went to get coal off railroad cars. She was too small to do any of the work, so she thinks that he just wanted someone to watch in case he got hurt or into trouble. Frank got onto a coal car while the train was slowly pulling out of the rail yard and threw off coal until the train picked up speed; then he jumped off. The family needed the fuel, but couldn't afford to buy any.]
